Jaundice refers to the yellow color of the skin and whites of the eyes, it may occur due to excess bilirubin in the blood. The color of the skin and sclerae depending on the bilirubin. When the bilirubin level is mildly elevated, they are yellowish. When the level of bilirubin is high, then they tend to be brown. Bilirubin is produced by the breakdown of red blood cells. As the old cells are broken down, hemoglobin is changed into bilirubin and removed by the liver. The build-up of bilirubin in the blood is known as hyperbilirubinemia. Jaundice has three types: Hemolytic jaundice, Hepatocellular jaundice and Obstructive jaundice.
