Desoxyn Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Methamphetamine hydrochloride

Amphetamines am-FET-a-meens ) belong to the group of medicines known as central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methamphetamine is a stimulant and an appetite suppressant. It stimulates the central nervous system by increasing the amount of chemicals in your body. It increase attention and decrease restlessness in patients who are overactive. These medicines are used as part of a total treatment program that also includes social, educational, and psychological treatment.

Desoxyn Dosage

  • The usual starting dose for children 6 years and older is 5 milligrams of desoxyn taken once or twice a day. Doctor may increase your dosage by 5 milligrams a week until the child responds to the medication.
  • The usual starting dose for adults and children 12 years and older is 5 milligrams and you should be taken this medicine one-half hour before each meal.

Uses of Desoxyn

  • Desoxyn is used as a short-term aid to weight loss, and it help to control certain behavioral problems in children.
  • Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are also used in the treatment of narcolepsy.

Side Effects of Desoxyn

If you are using desoxyn, then discuss the side effects of desoxyn with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of desoxyn may include:

  • Changes in sex drive
  • sleeplessness
  • constipation
  • restlessness
  • diarrhea
  • rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • dizziness
  • overstimulation

  • increased blood pressure
  • exaggerated feeling of well-being

Warnings and precautions before taking Desoxyn:

  • If you have mild high blood pressure, then you should be used desoxyn with caution.
  • After taking desoxyn, you will be feel some sleepy or it may affect your ability to perform potentially hazardous activities, such as operating machinery or driving a car. So do not perform any activities where you require full alertness.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with desoxyn, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of desoxyn. So discuss with your doctor before combining desoxyn with the following:

  • Antidepressants classified as "tricyclics," such as includes elavil, pamelor, and tofranil
  • Drugs classified as monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as includes the antidepressants nardil and parnate

Overdose

After taking desoxyn, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a desoxyn overdose may include:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • vomiting
  • agitation
  • tremor
  • blood pressure changes
  • confusion
  • shock
  • convulsions (may be followed by coma)
  • restlessness
  • depression
  • rapid breathing
  • diarrhea
  • panic attacks
  • exaggerated reflexes
  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • hallucinations
  • muscle aches and weakness
  • high fever
  • irregular heartbeat
  • kidney failure
