Isordil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Isosorbide dinitrate

ISOSORBIDE DINITRATE (Isordil®, Sorbitrate® Chewable/SL) is a type of vasodilator. It helps in relaxes blood vessels, increasing the blood and oxygen supply to your heart. It reduce the pain, that may cause with angina. Isosorbide dinitrate may also help to prevent pain before activities that may cause an attack such as includes climbing stairs, exercise, going outdoors in cold weather, or having sex. Isosorbide dinitrate is in a class of drugs known as nitrates. When blood vessels are dilated, then it is easier for the heart to pump. Also, more blood, which is rich in oxygen, can flow to the heart.

Isordil Dosage

  • The usual starting dose for the prevention of an impending attack of angina is 5 or 10 milligrams every 2 to 3 hours.
  • To prevent chronic stable angina pectoris, the usual starting dose for swallowed is 5 to 20 milligrams. Your doctor may increase initial dose to 10 to 40 milligrams every 6 hours.

Uses of Isordil

  • Isordil is used to treat attacks of angina and to prevent attacks of angina from occurring.
  • It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
  • It may also used to reduce symptoms of a weakened heart when used in combination with another agent known as hydralazine.

Side Effects of Isordil

If you are taking Isordil, then discuss the side effects of Isordil with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Isordil may include:

  • Collapse
  • vomiting
  • fainting
  • skin inflammation and flaking
  • perspiration
  • flushed skin
  • restlessness
  • high blood pressure
  • rash
  • nausea
  • pallor

Warnings and precautions before taking Isordil:

  • If you have anemia, the eye condition known as glaucoma, a previous head injury or heart attack, heart disease, low blood pressure, or thyroid disease, then you should use Isordil with caution.
  • If you are taking Isordil, then dizziness, lightheadedness, or faintness may occur, especially when you get up quickly from a lying or sitting position. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down.
  • This medicine is not recommended for use in children.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Isordil, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Isordil. Extreme low blood pressure may occur if you take Isordil with certain other high blood pressure drugs such as includes Cardizem and Procardia.

Overdose

After taking Isordil, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Isordil overdose may include:

  • Bloody diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • coma
  • visual disturbances
  • confusion
  • vertigo
  • convulsions
  • throbbing headache
  • fainting
  • slow pulse
  • fever
  • nausea
  • rapid
  • palpitations
  • paralysis
