Lasix Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Furosemide

FUROSEMIDE (Lasix®) is a diuretic medicine. It increase the amount of urine passed, which may causes the body to lose water and salt. Furosemide also helps to treat high blood pressure. It also reduces the swelling and water retention that may caused by various medical conditions, such as includes heart, liver, or kidney disease. Lasix is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine. It works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in urine output. Therefore, careful medical supervision is necessary during treatment.

Lasix Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 80 milligrams per day divided into 2 doses. Your doctor may also add other high blood pressure medications if Lasix is not enough.
  • You should started dosage of 20 to 80 milligrams. If needed, the dose may be increased. Your doctor may increase the dose by 20 milligrams or 40 milligrams with each successive administration each 6 to 8 hours after the previous dose until the desired effect is achieved.

Uses of Lasix

  • Lasix is used to treat fluid retention in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as includes nephrotic syndrome.
  • Lasix is also used to treat high blood pressure or hypertension.

Side Effects of Lasix

Warnings and precautions before taking Lasix:

  • If you are allergic to furosemide, sulfa drugs, or any other drugs, then you should tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you are taking any prescription and nonprescription medications especially other medications for high blood pressure, aspirin, corticosteroids, digoxin, indomethacin, lithium, medications for diabetes, probenecid, and vitamins, then tell your doctor and pharmacist. If you are taking cholestyramine or colestipol, then you should take it at least 1 hour after taking furosemide.
  • If you have diabetes, gout, or kidney or liver disease, tell your doctor and pharmacist.
  • You should be also avoided unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Because furosemide may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Lasix, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Lasix. So first consult to your doctor before combining Lasix medicine with the following drugs.

  • Lithium (Lithonate)
  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics such as Garamycin
  • Sucralfate (Carafate)
  • Aspirin and other salicylates
  • Other high blood pressure medications such as Hytrin and Cardura
  • Ethacrynic acid (Edecrin)
  • Norepinephrine (Levophed)
  • Indomethacin (Indocin)
Overdose

After taking Lasix, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Lasix overdose may include:

  • ringing in your ears
  • loss of appetite
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • confusion
  • feeling light-headed
  • fainting
